Piano Man

I came across this video through my now favorite video site, vimeo (sorry youtube). It's titled, Light-Paint Piano Player and it is by Ryan Cashman. The skyline in the background is San Diego.

A Sickness?

yes, I'm a Romantic, overly sentimental,
something of a hero worshipper,
and I do
not apologize for this.
instead, I revere Hemingway,
at the end of his endurance,
sticking the
barrel of the gun into his trembling
mouth;
and I think
of Van Gogh slicing off part of his ear
for a whore
and then blasting himself away in the
cornfield;
then there was Chatterton drinking rat
poison (an extremely painful way to die
even if you are a
plagiarist);
and Ezra Pound dragged through
the dusty streets of Italy in a cage
and later confined to a
madhouse;
Celine robbed, hooted at, tormented by
the French;
Fitzergald who finally quit drinking only to drop dead
soon thereafter;
Mozart in a pauper's grave;
Beethoven deaf;
Bierce vanishing into the wastelands of Mexico;
Hart Crane leaping over the ship's rail and
into the propeller;
Tolstoy accepting Christ and giving all his
possessions to the
poor;
T. Lautree
with his short, deformed
body
and perfectly developed
spirit,
drawing everything he
saw
and more;
D.H. Lawrence
dying of TB
and preparing his own Ship of Death
while writing his
last
great poems;
Li Po
setting his poems
on fire
and sailing them down the
river;
Sherwood Anderson dying
of peritonitis
after swallowing a
toothpick
(he was at a party
drinking
martinis
when
the olive went in,
toothpick and
all);
Wilfred Owens killed
in the first Great War
while
saving the world for
Democracy;
Socrates drinking
hemlock with a
smile;
Nietzsche gone mad;
De Quincey addicted to opium;
Dostoevsky standing blindfolded before a
firing squad;
Hamsun eating his own
flesh;
Harry Crosby commiting
suicide hand in hand with his
whore;
Tchaikovsky trying to
evade his homosexuality
by marrying a female
opera star;
Henry Miller, in his old
age, obsessed with
young Oriental
girls;
John Dos Passos going
from fervent left-winger
to ultraconservative
Republican;
Aldous Huxley taking
visionary
drugs and
reaping imaginary
riches;
Brahms in his youth,
working on ways
to build a powerful
body
because he felt that
the mind
was not
enough;
Villon barred from Paris,
not for his ideas
but rather because he was a
thief;
Thomas Wolfe who felt he couldn't
go home again
until
he was
famous;
and Faulkner:
when he got his morning mail.
he'd hold the envelope up
to the light
and if he couldn't see
a check in there
he'd throw it
away;
William Borroughs who shot and
killed his
wife
(he missed the apple
perched
on her
head);
Norman Mailer knifing his
wife; no apple
involved;
Salinger not believing
the world was worth writing
for;
Jean Julius Christian Sibelius,
a proud and beautiful man
composer of powerful music
who after his 40th year
went into hiding and was seldom
seen
again;
nobody is sure who
Shakespeare
was;
nightlife killed Truman
Capote;
Allen Ginsberg becoming a
college
professor;
William Saroyan marrying the
same woman twice
(but
by then
he wasn't going anywhere
anyhow);
John Fante being sliced away
bit by bit
by the surgeon's knife
before my very
eyes;
Robinson Jeffers
(the proudest poet of them all)
writing
beggin letters to those in power.

of course, there's more
to tell
and I could go
on and on
but even I
(the Romantic)
begin to
tire.

still, these men and women
--past and present--
have created and are creating
new worlds for
the rest of us,
despite the fire and despite the ice,
despite the
hostility of governments,
despite the ingrown distrust of the masses,
only to die
single
and usually
alone
.

you've got to admire them all
for the courage,
for the effort,
for their best and their
worst.

some gang!
they are a source of light!
they are a source of joy!

all of them
heroes you can be
grateful for
and admire from afar
as you wake up
from your ordinary dreams
each morning.

Music:

I've train-spotted a track (among others) from the Loco Dice Essential Mix I posted yesterday. What can I say? It's a solid fucking mix. Anyway, to no surprise, Mousa Big Band comes from Luciano and Mirko Loco. Part of an EP called Family. This was one of the key tracks that stood our for me in Dice's mix off the bat. A great hypnotic groove with a very peculiar sample that reminds me of a Star Wars creature of some sort. The vocal in it adds to to the total package.

Out on Desolat.

Los Tambores

After many weeks of hard work I am proud to say my label, petFood, is finally up and running. I started this label with Jay-You for the sole reason that we believe we have a sound and this is the next logical step. I will be putting out most of my own music through petFood and will ofcourse be looking for other talent who fit into our musical direction.

The first release is titled Los Tambores and it is a bit on the house side with big hand drums. It has a bassline that is pitched down humming that gives some dark tribal feel. It's a big track that has worked well for me at peak hours. Already gathering support from Oscar G, Sander Kleinenberg, among others.

You can preview and buy on beatport at the petFood store.

Make sure to add petFood on myspace for updates and such.

Expect monthly releases including more from Nitemares, Animales, new artists, and myself.

Bonus:

I just picked up the new Loco Dice essential mix. If you're into Los Tambores then you will definitely dig this mix as it is heavy in hand drums.

Download it here. (Rapidshare Link)

Gatas Y Perros

I recently had the chance to catch up with Catz 'N Dogz (Previously 3 Channels) for a splendid interview via email. This duo is extremely talented and have released under various labels including Trapez, Poker Flat, Crosstown Rebels, and dirtybird. To add fire to the flame, they have just released a full length album titled, Stars of Zoo, under Claude VonStroke's other label imprint, Mothership. A great album from start to end. It is very deeply rooted in house music without forgetting that very important techno factor. On top of all this they run their own label, Channel Recordings. Obviously, these guys are busy and so I am extremely thankful they took the time to give Shot Callin' such a wonderful interview.

1. How did you two first get involved with music?

We met in 2003 on the internet, and then at a party because we from the same city. Wojtek was making parties and starting to DJ. I was also just starting to DJ in a new club in the city, Mezzoforte. Because our music style was similar, we thought it would be nice to start making parties together. We didn't think about making music together back then though. The idea to produce music came about when we heard each other's tracks.

2. You guys have your own label, Channel Recordings, and have also put out stuff under various, very well respected labels, as well as remix other talented artists. What was a big catalyst moment for you that helped you push your music onto a broader audience?

There was two main moments that helped us believe in our music. First it was our release on Trenton records. After that we started to believe that we can produce more and better stuff. Second was the remix of "Who's Afraid of Detroit." After that things went much more faster and everything started to be more simple for us.

3. I enjoy both projects, 3 Channels and Catz 'n Dogz. Just to clarify for the readers, you guys are going into a bit of a different direction with Catz 'n Dogz and the new album correct? Can you elaborate a little on that?

3 Channels was our first project, at the beginning we were making it as a 3 persons. It was a young project we didn't know where we were going without style and we were experimenting. Catz 'n Dogz is a next step in our productions, we are more into the roots of house and techno music. We don't wat to say what direction we will go in next few years cuz we still don't know. I guess it will be more and more into the melodic stuff but still really groove. Our album is something between what our music was in the past and what our music will be in the future. We made cooperations with dOP, Mathias Kaden and Monty Luke, and there are a lot of good artists involved in remix projects. So actually everything turns up really good for us.

4. How did the album's name, "Stars of Zoo" come about? The album art is great, who drew that up?

The beginning was really simple: Gregory bought a cat and I bought a dog in the same time. We wanted to change the name but for the name that its really easy to make variations with album names and song titles. That's why we chose Catz 'n Dogz. The name Stars of Zoo came out from the name "Stars on 45" the old 12" that I have from my mother ;) About the artwork of the album; we are so happy about it!! When we saw the first preview of the artwork we said YES! straight away! It's made by Max Pfisterer, who also does the artwork for dirtybird and Connaisseur Recordings.

5. Stars of Zoo is coming out on Claude VonStroke's label, Mothership. In my opinion, one of the few good American labels (ironically dirtybird is part of the list too). How has it been working with Claude on this release?

Barclay (Claude VonStroke) and Christian Martin are our friends, not only the label managers, and that's very important for us. Great djs and producers, super nice people. Sounds like ass licking talk but that's all true. We're very happy to work with the whole Mothership crew. It all started from making a remix of "Who's Afraid of Detroit" which was really successful and nobody expected that. After that we were more motivated to go in this direction and we send some more stuff to dirtybird, and after the first ep they asked us about making an album. Before that we didn't think about making an album but it was really good idea and right time to do it. So it's really cool that someone believed in us and give us motivation that's really important.

6. I know a magician never reveals his secrets but most musicians usually go Logic Pro or Pro Tools as their DAW of choice. I've also read that with Catz 'n Dogz you're using more instruments and vocals. So spill the beans, do you find yourself using more analog gear for this album? DAW of choice?

We are not using analog stuff at all! Many people can't believe but it's true. Our studio, it's just a computer, controller and really cheap speakers. We really like to work with samples so we are searching for it all the time. We have a lot of samples from live instruments and we are also recording it by ourselves. Of course we like to sample old records, and we have all the time with us protable recorder: that's why on the first track of the album you can hear my mother's voice while she is opening the door for me ;)

7. Because I like to end interviews on obscure numbers. Any other upcoming projects you'd like to talk about? What's in the future for 3 Channels, Catz 'n Dogz and Channel Recordings? Any plans to come to the states?

At the moment we don't have a studio cuz I moved to Berlin and I'm searching for a nice new flat which is really pain in the ass cuz everybody is now moving to Berlin. We are doing right now just some first drafts of new stuff and I guess we will start few more remixes and some more cooperations with live vocals and instruments. We also want to do another EP for Leena next year and of course all the time working for Mothership. As for our label: We will release our friends from Warsaw, there will also be a release of Til von Sein with an Agnes remix. We are coming to the states on December already for few gigs LA, SF and Miami.

The guys agreed to let me upload a track off, Stars of Zoo. Lucky for us they gave us, Yes They Still Play Casio. A song that sticks with most of the albums theme and is rich in drums, gotta love the drums. Sticking to the Catz 'n Dogz name too, you will hear some great cats and dogs samples (literally). But wait there's more, the song features Mathias Kaden, who has already proven to be a very talented producer.

Stars of Zoo is out on Mothership

The rest of the album is great...seriously go out and buy it.

Kunsthofpassage

When it rains it pours but if you're  at Kunsthofpassage in Dresden (Germany) when it rains music is made. The drain system collects the water and makes the magic happen. This fun contraption is called the Funnel Wall.

I am really digging the direction Richie Hawtin is going lately (not that I didn't like his stuff already). But lately he's been EXTRA impressing me. His latest DJ compilation on the mighty M_nus showcases a slew of great tracks. The compilation is titled, Sounds from Can Elles. You can pick up the seperate tracks on Beatport, a lot of them are on the top charts actually. The MiniCoolBoyz remix of Marco Dassi's, Varese Ist Leer is one of my favorites on the mix. Big clean bassline with great subs that groove well, the vocal drop is very nicely done, and the combination of both the vocal and bassline after the drop is EPIC w1n.

Out on M_nus.

Paper Toy'z

Remember my previous post on paper zombies? Well lucky for us "arts & crafts" type I have stumbled upon a blog (Paper Toy'z) specifically dedicated to print at home and fold caricatures. The one pictured above goes by  the name of Coobie and it is a thunderpanda creation. You can download the template straight from here and give it a go.

This is the part where I say something inspiration to get you FUCKIN' psyched for arts & crafts.

You can do it!

The sky's the limit!

I BeLieVe in yOu!!!

Music:

Men in Slippers is a project between Mikael Stavostrand & KJ Gibbs. I caught wind of it through Davide Squillace's Beatport Chart (more on him in a second). The track is titled Ultra Necessity and it is a collection of random samples that come together perfectly. The drumming is superb and let's not forget the very unique driving bassline.

Out on MiniSketch.

Another notable MiniSketch track in Squillace's Beatport chart was Kerkez - Afterhours. Don't sleep on that one!

Now for those of you who live in the Miami area, Davide Squillace is playing on Saturday (Nov. 8th) @ Safe, which is held at Circa 28. Remember those two great tracks I just pointed out to you? Well MiniSketch is Squillace's label. Not only does he put out his own music on there but as you can see by the rest of the releases on MiniSketch and his Beatport chart the man has an extraordinary ear for music.

Safe is currently responsible for most of the good talent that comes through Miami so make sure to give their site another look.

Alcatraz

The Alcatraz Hotel is in Kaiserslautern, Germany. It used to be a prison that is now converted into a hotel. For those of you who want to sleep in a jail cell it'll run you about 70$  a night. Or you can just commit some petty crime like a DUI and spend the night in jail free of charge but then again when you factor in ticket, court, and other fees 70$ doesn't sound too bad.

Music:

Raum...musik is celebrating 10 years with a 3 part sampler. They have released for the likes of Miss Fitz, Christian Burkhardt and Sascha Dive among many others. This is musik067 so it comes to show you they really have released a lot. On the 1st of the 3 samplers you will hear tracks by Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts, Chupacabra & Dorian Paic, and last but not least Laverne Radix.

Congrats on the 10 Years!

Communication

A cleverly done TV spot that showcases the history of communication. If the music sounds familiar it's because it is none other than previously posted, Minilogue

Where will we evolve to next?

Music:

Get Physical is solid evidence of a label that consistently puts out good music...CONSISTENTLY.

Booka Shade is a solid evidence of a music act that consistently makes good music...CONSISTENTLY.

Is there really any surprise that this is a solid release? To add to all the excitement the remix E.P. for Booka's latest single, Sweet Lies, brings us even more goodies from the likes of Matthias Tanzmann and Patrice Baumel (both have been on fire).

Out on Get Physical.

Situational Differences

At one point or another we are faced with making a choice. The outcome could either be right or wrong. That gives us a fifty percent chance of making the right choice. If we were playing russian roulette with a two bullet barrel and only had one bullet in, those odds don't sound too great. Sometimes we are truly aware we are making the wrong choice but we're human and as humans we say "fuck it" and go on with it. Playing the odds, sometimes we get away with it and when we don't, we learn from our mistakes (supposedly). We are born innocent into a life of many corruptions, living the rest of our lives in an epic struggle to retain that innocence that inevitably is lost altogether at the end of the road. The most we can do is to slow down  the process but just like pulling a band-aid it is all preferential. Do we pull it off slowly? Or do we just get it over with with one quick pull?

I say we keep that band-aid on until it's filthy and barely sticking on. Then maybe we can even glue it back on.

Music:

Missive is taken from the forthcoming album debut album by Sei A. Great tech-house track with airy vocals coming in and out. I'm especially digging the Chaim remix with his addition of a snake charming pungi.

Out on Missive.

Also fellow Palms Out blogger and friend Joee Irwin sent me a mix he recently completed titled Decks, Box & MPB (brownie points for you if you know where the name is inspired from). It's a solid mix on the techno tip.
