A lesson in French House
It is yet another rare occasion of me not starting a post with a picture of a good looking girl. This time a friend of mine sent me a video of Daft Punk live at Bercy last night. It is good to see that the performance has seen a few changes from the oh-so-memorable Coachella performance. I had heard the performance was going to be left untouched until everyone got to see it but it seems like they're making a few adjustments, one which can be seen in this video.
It seems these days when you refer to French music a lot of kids look at the new movement of electronic music coming out of France right now. The new music is not bad but a lot of purists would argue that it's nothing compared to the peak French House of the 90's. A time of low-pass filters. A time where a track can go on for 5 minutes on one single loop and not become repetitive because the groove is so damn good. With that said, if anyone speaks to Guyman, tell him to bring back Crydamoure!

For this post I have a bit of a treat for you. I know this is going to completely rape my bandwidth but I'll see how it goes for a few days. If it gets out of hand then I'll take the file down so grab while you can.
Most of us have seen Daft Punk play recently, which is more of a light show than actually live. There was once a time where they actually did play live. A friend of mine saw them play at Roseland in 1997. He recalls them standing between two stands of gear. Among other stuff, there was a 909, 808, 303, 606 and a Korg z1. The lineup that night was full of actual live sets. Some of the others who performed were, Aphex Twin, Crystal Method, Death In Vegas and Sneaker Pimps. It's a shame that the year was 1997 and I was about eleven years old.
There was a rare occasion were Daft Punk actually did a DJ set. This occasion was at Twilo on October 16, 1998. I came across this DJ set which didn't feature their music but instead a collection of tasty French house tunes. Apparently this was a two part Dj set, with the second part being a Cassius DJ set. So without further due, I present to you the Daft Punk DJ set at Twilo.

also they didnt wear any space suits... in fact they were dressed quite casually... this was the set where i realised the genius of rollin' & scratchin' and rock & roll... they totally destroyed the place w/ rollin' & scratching
.... i could have sworn that they played the track for 15 mins w/ all the filter tweaks... they were changing 909 snare & hi hat parameters similar to Richie Hawtin's legendary Glastonbury set in 1994... i was so blinded by the flash of tunes like "around the world" & "da funk" that i'd pay little attention to these 2 tracks.... after that night i started playing the fuck out of "rollin' & scratchin"... a track so ahead of it's time yet so simple.

ps. this was also the the legendary Aphex Twin concert w/ the 2 dancing bears... it was RDJ on a huge couch, coffee table... laptop... and 2 huge freaking bears cavorting w/ each other to bucephalus bouncing ball... not to mention that the sound was so loud that it shook the whole venue and made whatever it was up in the ceiling drop down like as if it was snowing indoors.

Here's a 30 min set of Daft Punk at a rave in Wisconsin... a buddy of mine was actually at it. And yes, it was that cold, that jackets were important. Ahhhh... the good old days of Midwest ravin...

nice post...it's def. true what you mentioned about the "early" french house movement...i'm still listenin to all the crydamoure and roulé releases, which are yet worth to be played in a nice set (especially "soul bells" by le knight club).
Well thanks for sharing despite the bandwidth rapage. YEah I remember when the Homework album first came out, we were driving around clapping to olling n scratching. By far one of my favorite albums of all time. Have you heard the Radio Slave remix of Da Funk with elements of Daftendirekt mixed in? Definetly one of the best daft punk remixes out there. Damn I feel old! I was 27 that year and saw Daft Punk in Miami during the WMC. We checked in at the same time and then I saw them dj in a little backroom of the now defunct Liquid nightclub. Damn they tore that place up and I'll never forget it!

I got word that both Roule and Crydamoure are not dead. Just been on hold. Most likely going to see some stuff from Crydamoure first. After this DP world tour is done. Looking forward to it.
