Just one more dollar...please

I was a little alarmed when I tried to upload one of my own tracks to my myspace player and got a "File Blocked. Copyright Asserted" error. I tried re-uploading several times, changing the filename, id3, etc. but no dice. So I did what I do everytime I panic...google. It seems that Universal has came up with a new way of making more revenue than it already has, by suing the shit out of everyone. Universal was recently sued by Myspace, forcing myspace to have this new ridiculous filter of uploading songs. It uses the database over at gracenote.com, if any word out of the file you upload brings up a query, it is basically fucked. I experimented with uploading different files and to my surprise, Tom Waits made the cut and even a Daft Punk bootleg I did made the cut as well. How's that for an effective system? Let's set up this copyright filter that filters all the independent artists but allows everything that IS supposed to be filtered. Another interesting aspect of this is that even if I owned copyrights to my own track and was on gracenote.com because of whatever release, I still wouldn't be able to upload my own track onto myspace without it being blocked.

Another ridiculous case by Universal is when they sued Microsoft. Apparently, Universal won the case and is now entitled to profit share from every Zune mp3 player sold. I congratulate you Universal as you now have a great new way of making income.

Video:

Going through a hard drive of old music videos and performances, I was left to think "What the fuck happened?" How and why has live performances gone down the shithole? Bands from the past shot these videos in one take with an amazing live sound. Some bands even fucking did an elaborate choreographed dance while playing live! (See Heatwave). In my quest to bring you the best possible blog experience I've decided to incorporate a classic video in each (or almost each) post. And this wouldn't be possible without the lovely youtube.com, which was sued by Universal as well!

The video I'm posting today is a live video of Vanilla Fudge performing their hit single You Keep Me Hanging On. Aside from every member in this band being a complete character and having tremendous stage presence, the sound is on point. My personal favorite is the drummer in the beginning, when he's stopping the crash/ride.

Music:

Ripgroove, a classic track from '97 by Double 99 , gets a reworking by Tim Deluxe for an '06 version. Tim stays true to the songs key elements for the most part, just mostly emphasizing on long breaks. Ofcourse it's always hard to top a good classic but it's quite hard to dislike this remix.

Out on AT Records.

Universal would be making money out of Microsoft, if only Microsoft could shift Zunes in any significant numbers! Bastards.

joel- first time i saw this video i was blown away.

anon #1- glad you like

anon #2- Zune has number two mp3 market share now! haha. You're right though. I believe Ipod has something around 78% share now, with Zune just beating Zen players.

The same thing just happened to me! I'm a very amateur musician who has been fucking around posting my own tunes for my friends on a newly-created Myspace artist page (http://www.myspace.com/daxartist)

The fourth song I tried to upload gave me the "File blocked! Copyright asserted." bullshit too.

This really sucks. Is there no way around this? I mean I'm trying to genuinely express myself here and I'm being told that my shit is already copyrighted somewhere.

cyphre- I'd say keep trying with different names or just waiting it out for a few days. I'm pretty convinced the system is sporadic and makes no sense whatsoever.

myspace support is out of the question, they never get back to you

You are pretty much scr_wed with the shyte system that Gracenote has implemented for Myspace. They do not accurately identify music properly in many cases. This causes music such as yours to be rejected because they just block everything. Gracenote has no idea whose music is whose, so you are out of luck, Myspace is out of luck, and your potential market is out of luck, too.

Same thing happened to me with the file blocked. Also Myspace didn't get back to me. I had to use "not the actual song title" for my song title what is actually "Final Feedback" sucks.

You wanna know a way to get around that filter?

I just found it out:

Just turn down the vocals a bit (tbh i turned em down that much that u can still hear em but the words shouldnt be that clear as that software analyzes the vocal peaks and can identify words too).
I did that with a new remix i made and tadaaaaaaa it worked.
Hope this helps.
Good luck
